Once upon a time, stories captivated audiences around firesides, playing on the light and shadow, creating a realm that cast beauty with horror. The fairy tale is wondrous and ever changing, over time refashioned and reinterpreted, with each layer of depth adding to the legacy of the tale.

This project looks behind the curtain of the popular fairy tale genre, to uncover forgotten stories and expose a modern audience to details they may not know in a Disney-fied era. While fairy tales are fantastical and other-worldly, each adaptation portrays the social mindsets of the time. Together, they are reflective of a cultural evolution and the change in society’s values.
Titled The light and the dark of fairy tales, each tale is presented in pairs. The ‘light’ side symbolises hope and empowerment, and the ‘dark’ side symbolises sinister histories and the consequential impact of outdated intentions.

The images act as a visual metaphors to the written information. Each image is a photomontage of multiple photographs and illustrations from Unsplash and Adobe Stock. After creating a still composition in Photoshop, various elements were animated in After Effects and Plotagraph.
